Today we spent some time with our local travel medicine specialist, Dr. Story. He and his staff were more than a little confused with our responses to their questions. They didn't quite know what to do with us.
"Your chart says you're going on a global scavenger hunt. What countries will you be visiting?"
"We don't know."
"You don't know?"
"We don't know."
"Okay...
"Do you think you might be in Asia... say, Vietnam or Cambodia? Because we need to think about Japanese encephalitis."
"We don't know."
"Uh...
"Will you be in central Africa? Because we would be concerned about Yellow Fever and meningococcal meningitis."
"We don't know."
"You think you might be in the tropics?"
"We don't know."
"Will you be in big cities or rural areas?"
"We don't know."
"Do you know if you'll be visiting farms or rice fields?"
"We don't know."
"Okay, seriously... do y'all have any idea of where you will be going, or what you will be doing?!"
"Nope. We really don't know, and that's the fun of it!"
"Geez... do you know anything?"
"We know we're starting in LA, and ending three weeks later in NYC... and we're going the LONG way. It's gonna be a hell of an adventure!"
(Turns out we were up to date on most of the recommended immunizations. Dr. Story prescribed some malaria preventative. We're good to go!!}
